Developments at the spice rack. The only place suitable for a nature table/advent scene in my apt right now. I moved the advent candles to my table. Anyway... winter sprite, wielding her magical snowball wand and catching the light of crystals and stones.
It’s a start. It will look a lot better after I redo my spice rack with uniform jars soon and I will probably find some new cloths as a backdrop anyway. Painting works but it’s just up as a temporary filler. “The first Light of Advent is the light of stones: The Light that shines in seashells, in crystals, and in bones.”
Living their own lives now on top of the piano until they find new homes in a few weeks. I’ve moved on to using my own (vs. school) materials, so these may be at my own (limited) booth which I’m sharing with the grade 11 fundraiser t-shirts. #waldorfeducation #waldorftoys #naturetable #waldorfnaturetable #waldorfkindergarten #woolenangels #woolenfairies #needlefelting
How did I go about making this Mother Nature figure? Here’s an alternative explanation: I have a lot to say about imagination and the meaning behind things these days—the activities we engage but especially festivals, holiday traditions, symbols, etc... Where does inspiration (for these things) come from? Do you recognize the process happening within yourself? What is the activity of your thought life when your mind is allowed to wonder, ponder questions, and live a bit longer into the unknown? We want to raise capable and creative children in this world. The kind of activities they engage in, especially practical work within the arts allow the body, soul and spirit (mind) to unite in a creative way that is unique to each individual. On the one hand you have the material world and the creative, often rhythmical activity you engage your physical body within. On the other, the spiritual world—your inner life, and the thoughts that accompany you through these kinds of activities. In the Waldorf school we make a lot things that are all the same—everyone knits a pair of socks in fifth grade, yet each one is unique. With practice and objective observation, one begins to be able to “see” the movement of the soul life between the physical and spiritual activities. By the word “spiritual” I don’t just mean something mystical but more something intangible, deeply connected to our consciousness and our inner life. The part of us no one else can experience or ever truly know. * The window of childhood is so brief, so fleeting... the time children are allowed to live into this space is becoming increasingly smaller and more limited. They will learn to read. They will learn to write. They will be able to take on the greater challenges of the times they face. Crush this window and you are left with children filled with doubt and potentially crippling anxiety about problems they can’t yet comprehend. For those who are privileged enough to experience the joys of childhood innocence, do not deprive them of this gift. It is a wellspring for their future independence. Do not succumb to fears that they won’t learn fast enough or soon enough. (Continued in comments...)
